Development & Objectives
The Agency for European Integration and Economic Development (AEI), a non-profit company with Limited Liability is mandated as a general management body for projects for public sector by the European Commission.
The AEI was founded in 2003 by the Austrian Ministry of Finance and has acted as an Austrian coordinating platform for international projects ever since. The AEI and its members are combining competence and experience of over 250 successfully implemented projects in more than 43 countries. We cooperate with international, national, regional and local institutions, to implement economic, institutional and capacity development projects as well as public administration reforms seeing them through the full management process. The AEI, as a mandated body and the most experienced Austrian service provider for EU Twinning projects, will be responsible for the technical administration, organization and financial management of the project in continuous consultations and close coordination with the Consortium partner(s). Our professional finance management will ensure that the Twinning partner(s) can fully concentrate their efforts on the content issues of the project at hand.
With the active involvement in development, counselling services and training activities and research, the AEI supports the end-to-end project-cycle. The AEI represents a professional interface between its members, relevant Ministries and public bodies, stakeholders in international public administration and policy, research and businesses. The AEI offers a record of considerable regional experience in cooperation with Central, Eastern and South-Eastern European Countries. The thematic areas are ranging from Migration and Asylum, Reintegration and Readmission, Money Laundering, Combat Trafficking in Human Beings and People Smuggling, Counter Terrorism and Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Violent Extremism, Taxes, Combat Illicit Trafficking of Narcotics and Drug Abuse, Customs related issues, Audits, Internal Revision, Commercial Fraud, Integrated Border Management, Strategic Security Management, Security Sector Reform Processes, Youth, Health, Tourism, Culture and many more.
As an implementing agency representing Austria at the EUNIDA (European Network for Implementing Development Agencies), the mandate of the AEI evolved to support international development activities on behalf of the EU. The AEI has acted as vice president of EUNIDA twice, until the liquidation of the EUNIDA due to a thorough reform process in 2017. The EU Twinning projects implemented by the AEI in Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina were selected as “Twinning Success Story” by the European Commission.
